He/She Smells a Hoo-Hoo

He/She Smells a Hoo-Hoo by Jack Bunbury
This wild book resides in a world of its own: a side-splittingly funny transgender epic. If Dr. Seuss, Pee-Wee Herman and Dr. Frank-N-Furter had a child, she might begin to resemble He/She – that is, if she had big hair and liked to sip mango-rum fizzes by the pool.

In this antic little story – the book is a quick read at only 48 pages – author Jack Bunbury relates how He/She discovers an horrendous stench ruining her lazy afternoon.

On the 15th of June, in the Jungle of Jools,
in the heat of her hotness, in the Pool of the Cool,
she was splashing… in a vintage two-piece pastel
when He/She the Elegant smelled a small smell.

For a sensitive girl like her, this simply won’t do.

So He/She stopped splashing. She checked her waxed pits.
That’s funny, she thought. I must be losing my wits.
Then she smelled it again! Just a very faint scent
rudely shrinking her violets without her consent.

Clearly, some action was required.

I must stop it, thought He/She. But what is it? Where?
She prodded and she poked but could feel nothing there
but those small specks of reek floating past through the air.
“I say!” muttered He/She. “I’ve never heard tell
of an odor so vile, it shrank nippies as well.

So she dresses herself and her two small annoying dogs for the road and launches into the city. What follows are shocking encounters with the rude and crude, the jealous, the gluttonous, and well, let’s just say there’s a generous serving of chicken and hot Italian buns.
